What is WorkSafe BC?

WorkSafe BC (WSBC) is a independent provincial agency in British Columbia that monitors employers’ compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and the Workers Compensation Act. The WSBC is responsible for the prevention of workplace injury and compensation of employees in the events of work-related injuries or disease. Furthermore, the WSBC provides no-fault liability insurance and workers’ compensation to British Columbia’s workplaces.

How does workers’ compensation function for employers?

Most employers in the province must pay a premium that funds WorkSafe BC. In return, the WSBC compensates your employees for work-related injuries no matter the cause of injury. Additionally, employers are protected from lawsuits taken by employees for work-related injuries when they receive WSBC compensation.

Note that the amount of compensation is determined by the seriousness of the injury and possible time off from work. Not all injuries are covered by WSBC, such as unrelated health problems that occur outside of work.

Employer Responsibilities With WorkSafe BC

You are required to register for WorkSafeBC insurance coverage if you own a business that hires one or more employees on a full-time, part-time, casual, or contract basis.

Specifically, employers have the responsibility to:

  1. Work with employees to prevent on-the-job injuries and accidents;
  2. Report any injury to WorkSafe BC;
  3. Provide treatment and medical attention for any injury that occurs at work; and
  4. Maintain a WSBC account and pay premiums.

Remember, it is a legal requirement that all injuries that happen in the workplace must be reported.
